Choosing foods rich in these nutrients will improve skin condition and reward you with a glowing  complexion.  Here you will find a list of the top foods to eat more of and the reasons why these    superfoods are your best weapon against wrinkles. If you find that your diet is lacking the fruits  and vegetables needed to obtain the daily dose of vitamins needed to keep your skin looking it's  best, in a high quality multi-vitamin and  anti-oxidant may to the trick.  There are several great  food sourced supplements on the market in the form of vitamin powders, liquids or capsules that  will help you meet the minimum RDA of these much needed nutrients.

However, it is best to obtain most of your daily vitamins from food sources.  Below we have  listed the foods that contain the nutrients needed to keep your skin hydrated, glowing and young  looking at any age.

Salmon

Full of EFA's, Salmon provides our skin with the much needed essential fatty acids that keep skin well moisturized from the inside out.

Watercress
Watercress is full of vitamins A, C and E and rich in iodine, iron, folate and antioxidants. Because watercress works like a natural antibiotic and anti-inflammatory, it heals the skin, eliminates blemishes and is beneficial for treating acne, eczema and other skin conditions.

Carrots
Carrots contain high levels of antioxidants which prevent free radical damage of cells and are an excellent source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C.  Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and also aids in skin collagen formation which helps keep skin looking young and plump.  Vitamin A aids in the development of skin cells and the maintenance of proper skin cell health. A vitamin A deficiency can lead to dry skin.  Carrots are also a superior source of fiber, biotin, vitamins K, C and B6, potassium and thiamine.

Green Leafy Vegetables
Wonderful for skin, hair and nails because leafy greens slow down age-related cellular degeneration.  Our bodies convert the beta carotene in leafy greens to vitamin A which regulates the production and turnover of cells and keeps skin remain smooth. Dark leafy greens are a rich source of vitamin C, K, E, and B, as well as iron, calcium, and fiber.  They contain powerful antioxidants like beta carotene (vitamin A), lutein, and zeaxanthin that destroy the free radicals that damage and weaken our body cells.  Beta carotene strenghtens the immune system, while lutein and zeaxanthin prevent degenerative eye diseases like cataract.

Mangos
Loaded with vitamin A, Mangos repair skin cells and keep skin looking smooth, minimizing dullness and dryness.

Berries
Berries are full of antioxidants and will keep our skin youthful and healthy.  Indulge in blueberries, strawberries, plums, and blackberries daily. Strawberries have a cleansing effect on the body too.

Cabbage
Purple-coloured foods are the best source of antioxidants which not only fight wrinkles but protect against cancer too.  Two reasons to eat cabbage daily.

Millet
High silicon content in millet makes it an ideal food source for healthy skin, hair, nails and eyes and teeth too.

Almonds
High in Vitamin E and moisturizes skin from within, Almonds protect skin from premature aging and damage.  Add a handful of almonds or a TBSP of almond oil to your salads daily.

Avocado
Avocado is known as natures butter. Use it in place of butter or margarine to benefit from it's rich source of nutrients. It is packed with antioxidants, essential oils, potassium, B-complex vitamins and good fats, all nutrients that are required for healthy skin. Avocado also has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe red and irritated skin and is a wonderful addition to a healthy diet.

Green Tea
Green tea is rich in polyphenols, works as an anti-oxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties that fight off the free radicals that make our skin age early.  Replacing coffee with green tea will improve your skin and your health.

Dandelion Greens
Dandelion is a healing herb that can be used as food or medicine. It is rich in vitamins A, B complex, C, and D, and high in minerals such as iron, potassium, and zinc. Dandelion is known to eliminate toxins from the body and is often found in cleansing formulas. Because it cleanses the body of toxins, it has a wonderful effect on the skin.  Increase your consumption of Dandelion by steeping 2 bags of dandelion tea over night and drink in the morning or add young dandelion greens to a salad.

Herbs We Love

I love herbs. All herbs.

They are rich in nutrients, have many healing properties, can encourage healthy glowing skin, can be an alternative to drugs and can be used as preventative medicine as well.

Herbs should be treated as medicine as they can do much good but can also cause harm if you take a herb that is not good for your body.

Any substance that can do good can also do harm.

There are herbs known to increase iron in the body, speed up healing from wounds and broken bones, increase collagen production in the body and strengthen hair and nails just to name a few.  Some herbs can be used to treat medical conditions and sometimes can work better than a pharmaceutical drug without the negative side effects that are caused by drugs.

Milk Thistle and Goldenseal are two popular herbs that are often used medicinally. Milk thistle is used to treat illness related to the liver and Goldenseal is known to act as a natural anti-biotic.  Nettles, Curcumin and Rosemary are often used as food and spices and have medicinal properties as well. Using these herbs as foods offer many benefits. Did you know Nettles are rich in vitamins and minerals and act like an anti-histamines. Curcumin not only tastes great on food but is used to treat inflammatory conditions. Rosemary gives food a great flavor but is also a powerful antioxidant and natural preservative.

Using herbs in the kitchen not only adds flavor but boots the nutrient content of your meals.

I prefer organic herbs and use both fresh and dried herbs. Rosemary, Oregano, Basil, Tumeric, Black Cumin Seed and Wild Oregano are some herbs that are often used in the cooking and also offer a plenty of vitamins and minerals. They can be used directly on food, made into a tea or taken in capsule form.

One of my favorite herbs is Stinging Nettle Leaf.

Stinging Nettles provide several healing benefits with no side effects and are an incredible source of nutrition. They are a natural anti-inflammatory and natural anti-histamine, assist the body in times of illness and stress, have a high content of iron, calcium, and silica, as well as other trace minerals. Stinging Nettles are rich in vitamins A, B, C, D, and K and are a substantial source of protein. Stinging Nettles is wonderful herb that will enrich hair and skin and in my opinion is the perfect food.

Because Nettles contain compounds that reduce inflammation, the herb acts as an anti-inflammatory that can be used both externally and internally. For skin conditions, apply the fresh herb topically to skin or make an infusion to blend into your favorite cream. For inflammation in the body such as skin, sinuses or joints, the herb can be taken internally as a tea or a tincture.
My experience with nettles has been that the herb provides almost immediate relief for seasonal allergies. This is because nettles are known to be an anti-histamine. Taken internally, nettle alleviates the symptoms associated with seasonal allergies and have been proven to lessen the severity of food allergies as well.

For hay fever, try Stinging Nettle

Nettle is available in capsule, tincture or tea form. Personally, I prefer the tea and recommend this tea day and night during allergy season.

Recipe
Steep 6 tea bags in 1 Litre of boiled water overnight
Drink in morning
Pepare tea again in morning, steep all day and drink before bed.  Symptoms should improve within 45 minutes of consuming tea.
Another concentrated way to receive the benefits of nettles is by a tincture. For those who avoid tinctures because of the alcohol content, nettle juice is available.

My preference is Salus Nettle Juice.  Salus is all natural and does not contain any alcohol, sugar, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives . Just be sure to consume within 7 days of opening.

Salus is imported from Europe and distributed by Flora, a Canadian company based out of Vancouver. Flora is a reputable company and the Flora label is well known for its high quality products. Salus Nettle Juice can be purchased at health food stores or online and is available worldwide.

Since allergies are directly related to digestion, it is no surprise what we eat and do not eat will affect allergies. Adding nettles to your diet in the form of capsules, tincture, tea or eaten as a vegetable will not only improve symptoms, but improve digestion as well.
